A national entering exam for public university called "Center Shiken" will be held on January 20 and 21.
If you want to become a student of Tokyo University, which is the best university in Japan, you have to get really high score in this exam. (Private universities usually provide their original entering exams.)

Would you like to see how the Japanese exam for English is?
Here is the link for the last year's questions. It may be fun for you to try  :P

English is not my native language but I'm doing pretty good! O(≧∇≦)O Suzu, what scores do japanese students get in average on this test?
Posted by iadv Jan 8th 2007
499,630 students took that English exam and the average was 127.52 out of 200. oh as you already know, the descriptions in the test are in Japanese. sorry I don't have enough time to translate each question, but maybe you can guess what to do. Here is the link to the answer and point allocation. Thanks for the links, I'm gonna check out them... I'm doing the writing test right now. One question, do students take the listening test using headphones or the audio is played back through bigger speakers so all students listen the same thing?.
Posted by iadv Jan 8th 2007
They use headphones, but they cannot forward/rewind/stop the audio by themselves. They just listen to the same thing at the same time. Let me know what you think of Japanese exams when you finish it! ;D

The test difficulty level seems to be on par with FCE (First Certificate in English) exam from Cambridge University which is an upper-intermediate level exam, but the british one has also a speaking part that evaluates your conversational skills. The listening test was nice, the voices were pretty clear to me because it was in plain american english... I've to be more concentrated to understand british accent, so that's why I liked that part of the test.

oh the british one has a speaking test?? that's interesting, but i'm sure it will make japanese students cry because we are not used to do some output for a test :P
