Striking similarity between Hindi and Japanese

At the start of the Japanese classes, my teacher told us that Japanese sentences are similar to Hindi one, but I didn't trust him. I thought that he is saying so to boost our moral and remove the fear. But after getting few lessons of Japanese, I was surprised to see the similarity between the sentence structure of Japanese and Hindi. They have so many similarities that it became very easy for us to understand and grasp it.

Below are few examples, see how english is very different:

You are a Japanese.
Anata wa Nihon-jin desu.
  |        |         |
Aap      Japani    hain.
( hain is similar to particle desu, but it takes different forms like hai, hun, ho depending upon gender and number...!!!)

Are you a Japanese
Anata wa Nihon-jin desu  ka.
 |         |         |    |
Aap      Japani    hain  kya?

Whose pen is this?
Kono penu wa dare no  desu ka.
 |    |       |   |    |
Ye   kalam   kis -ki  hai?
( Here some difference, the question particle is not used.. there must be "some" difference.. ;-)).

This pen is of Sato-san.
Sono penu wa Sato-san no desu.
 |     |       |   |  |   |
Ye   kalam   Sato-ji  ki  hai.
(ji is similar to san of Japanese, something to give respect)

I work from 10 AM to 8 PM.
Watashi wa gozen ju-ji   kara gogo hachi-ji  made hataraki-masu.
  |          |    |  |    |    |    |    |    |     |       |
Main       subah das-baje se  raat aath-baje tak   kam    karta hun.

Cheers...!!!!

Sure Suzu, I think it would be very easy for you to learn Hindi, infact any north Indian language. As most of the north Indian languages follow the same pattern and similar grammar...!!!

It's funny, I know some hindi (still learning) and then when I watch something in Japanese even the words themselves I hear many that sound the same. It's interesting that the structure is also similar! Very odd, considering that hindi is from sanskrit which is Indo-European, and Japanese is not! Makes me quite curious, linguistically :)
