Valentine's Day in Japan

Maybe some of you already know what Japanese people do on the Valentine's Day.
It's a kind of romantic and exciting event mainly between Japanese school boys and girls.

On the Valentine's Day, girls give chocolates to boys who they like or who they think is special (sometimes as a boyfriend).
So, on that day, boys start to get excited and become a little upset when they get none...
Every year, some of my male friends say "I couldn't get any chocolate this year TOO...", "the only person who gave me a chocolate was my mom..." XD
I used to make a handmade chocolate with my friends when i was a jr.high school student. hmm, good memory :P

Some girls just enjoy the event by giving chocolates to others and some girls (usually at work) give it to others because they think it is like a social obligation, and those chocolates are called "giri-chocolate". (giri=buty/ obligation, maybe pity too)

In my company, we used to collect some money (1000 yen) from all female workers to buy small Giri-chocolate for each male worker, but these years, we are not doing it anymore because the company has become a little bigger.

Do you think it is unfair because only girls spend money on the Valentine's Day in Japan?
Don't worry, boys will need to return some presents on the White Day, which is on March 14th, and I think it is a Japanese original day introduced by a sweets company. I'll write about it when the day comes ;)

Japanese boys are lucky in this case... ;-) They get the girl and the chocolate too.. :D In India the boy is supposed to pay for every thing. Even on the date, it is boy who mostly pays, and if he ask for a share he is considered as bad and uncaring guy. I am lucky as well as unlucky till now, i have never paid for date, because I have never been to any date... !!!! :D :D

But not all is giri-choko, what about honmei-choko (chocolate for the man the woman is serious about)?. Well... Valentine's day in Japan has maybe a different meaning than other countries give to that day. I think Japan's day for true romance is christmas eve or something like that... correct me if I'm wrong Suzu. The day seems kinda one-sided because only girls give stuff, but of course as Suzu said, there's also the "White day" to help assuage the guilt feelings of those poor guys who were lucky and received chocolate on Valentine's Day but also feel obligated to give a present xD

munna, In japan, boys almost always pay for everything too. Asking a girl to pay for her bill is a thing that makes girls really really disappointed. Only the Valentine's Day is special. but the girls are supposed to get much more expensive return-presents on the White Day, so the boys never be lucky :P

iadv, i think people who care about honmei-choko are mostly only students and a few adults. as you know, christmas eve is more ramantic for adults than the valentine's day. it's interesting that we have giri-choko but don't have giri-christmas present.

We have a proverb here "Crows are black every where" , and Japan is no exception. So guys are unlucky every where.... just kidding. A good companion is much more than money...!!!!
