Can you guess what these words are in English? This is Japanese way of writing in roma-ji (roman-ji) style, and this is how japanese people pronounce English words. *The letter before a hyphen is hold and pronounced a bit longer. it's hard to explain for me... i hope you just learn ... (e.g. Ronga- (longer), suku-ru (school)) - Maunten/マウンテン - Doggu/ドッグ - Ru-mu/ルーム - Suta-/スター - Enta-teimento/エンターテイメント - Midoru suku-ru/ミドルスクール - Raion/ライオン The anwers are... - Mountain - Dog - Room - Star - Entertainment - Middle School - Lion difficult? easy? I think some of the basic words (like dog, cat, hello and star) should be written in English spelling because we have many chance to see those English word and we already know it.
Japanese language culture just a copy of other country. If you learned english well you have known 50% of the most frequent word in japanese.
If what you said it's true, then all english speaking people will all speak Japanese without learning it. Japanese like to shorten borrowed words, sometimes meanings are altered. Television = terebi Work = Arubaito = arbeit - it's german word PC = Paasokon = personal computer. Tamagotch = tamago(egg) + watch Mansion = manshon = Condominium pantsu = pants = can mean pants or underwear

hmmm, "50% of frequent word" is too far :( i'm sure knowing english words helps learning some japanese words and pronounciation but it is just for words borrowed from English. As eddie said, japanese like to shorten words, so not all of the borrowed words are exactly same as the original. and also, sometimes the meaning is not the same as the original.
