I think many Japanese dramas are amazing and they are one of the best materials available to learn the spoken language. Anime is not recommendable for that purpose because their language sometimes is deformed intencionally so that it goes funny. Also no Japaneses in general is speaking like any anime caracter even though there are some people who are just a copy of some caracter in anime.
Therefore, my conclusion goes with dramas because they are much safer in use in Japan. Of course you've got to take a note in which context the language is used for its proper use. Otherwise you could be ending up in an unfavorable situation by making yoursel misunderstood. Imagine if you'd speak Japanese like a mafia o police!
One more tip is: don't pick up girly or boyish language if you're not a girl or boy in each case. In Japanese gender distinction is so clear that inproper usage can carry a wrong message. It doesn't matter at all, however, if you are a guy who wants to talk like a girl, of course.
Anyway if you've not seen any J drama, give it a try and you'll see what I mean more clearly. Well, take care and talk to you soon! Have a nice weekend!
So, what kinds of drama would you recommend? Given that there aren't really any Japanese TV stations around where I live :).
Do you watch any TV in English?
